Sorry noticed that the You tube link from the False barrel article was not included. Here it is. This was a great project Tim and Linda recently did.
If you love the rustic look of a whiskey barrel planter but don't like fighting
with the weight consider this.
Here's a quick way to modify a half whiskey barrel into a much lighter
planter. If you have ever made a planter out of one of these barrels, you know
that it take a massive amount of dirt to fill it. This is not only inconvenient but
also completely unnecessary. We have tried to fill the barrel with milk jugs
before putting in the dirt but it just does not do the job very well. In order to
make this type of planter light enough to move around the yard easily, just
watch this video and you will see how simple it is to make your planter much
lighter than it would ordinarily be when filled with dirt. A simple false bottom
(old magician's trick) is the answer!
Putting the barrel in a wheel barrow to work on it and move it around the
yard makes the whole project a lot easier to handle. Half whiskey barrels are
currently available for around $40 at Menard's and Lowe's stores.
